St. Andrew\'s Church

The foundation stone for St. Andrew’s Church on Cubbon Road was laid on November 22, 1864 by Lady Hope Grant and was completed in November 1866 and opened for public worship on 18 Novemeber 1866, on an overall expenditure of about Rs 45,000 including the land. Consecrated in 1867, this church, which was built for the Scottish soldiers, has tablets in memory of many Scots. It is of Gothic Architecture and accommodates about five hundred people. The building is surrounded by a tower which holds the Municipal Jubilee Memorial Clock with four dials which was a great convenience to the people who lived around it. A fine Pipe Organ was erected in 1880 and a beautiful stained glass window in 1897 (this stained glass is one of the best in Bangalore even till today). In 1867 St. Andrew\'s Free School (up to the Primary Standard) was opened on Thimmiah Road a then poorer district of Bangalore. Here about 50 poor children were freely educated, given a mid-day meal daily and received new clothing annually.
