Balabrooie guest house

An 1850’s building, Balabrooie (On Sankey Road) was home of Sir Mark Cubbon, the then chief commissioner of Bangalore. After Mark Cubbon, the building was occupied by many high profile people that included the Dewan of Mysore Kingdom Sir Ismail Mirza and his family and home to the then chief minister Devaraj Urs. In the book \'The City Beautiful\', TP Issar unravels the mystery behind the name Balabrooie, as the name that comes from the Isle of Man, located off the British coast in the Irish Sea. Many residences on the isle bear the name Balabrooie which means ‘river bank farm’ or ‘farm on the river bank’. Perhaps Mark Cubbon named it thus as he hailed from the Isle of Man and wanted it to remind him of home.
